People who have received a cancer diagnosis (40% of the American population at some time in their lives) are undergoing a blow to their mental and emotional stability unlike any other. And yet, as Dr. Nancy E. Adler says in Cancer Care for the Whole Patient, “Both patients and providers tell us that attention to psychosocial health needs is the exception rather than the rule in oncology practice today.” Recognizing that need, leading doctors at the Norton Cancer Institute are ready to welcome a new way of looking at therapeutic experiences, through Shakespeare.

Kentucky Shakespeare seeks support for Survivorship Shakespeare, a pilot project serving cancer patients and survivors at Norton Cancer Institute. In the first year of the program, we’ll serve two NCI locations with a spectrum of free programs for their patients. Our programs provide a safe place for creative and emotional expression, resulting in an environment of learning, teamwork, and, most importantly, healing.

Our comprehensive arts outreach pilot program would include two primary components:

  • Drama Programs in Residence - Survivorship Shakespeare Troupe – Ongoing programs at the Downtown and St. Matthews NCI locations. As a culmination of the work and residency, the participants present a final performance.

  • “Shakespeare in a Box” – 12 drop-in interactive performances of 5 programs serving ages 3-adult
